Pyongyang (North Korea), 08 June 2026

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Pyongyang on Monday for a state visit to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), his first visit to the country in seven years. He was warmly welcomed at the airport by DPRK leader Kim Jong Un and his wife, Ri Sol Ju, along with Xi’s wife, Peng Liyuan.

A grand welcome ceremony was held at Kim Il Sung Square, where the two leaders reviewed an honor guard, observed a military parade, and attended a 21-gun salute. Large crowds lined the streets and gathered in the square, waving flags and flowers to welcome the Chinese delegation.

During talks with Kim, Xi described China-DPRK relations as entering a new historical stage. He emphasized the importance of strengthening political mutual trust, expanding practical cooperation, and deepening strategic coordination. Xi said the traditional friendship between the two countries is built on shared ideals, historical ties, and longstanding mutual support.

Xi reaffirmed China’s commitment to maintaining and developing relations with the DPRK regardless of changes in the international environment. He also reiterated China’s support for the DPRK’s socialist development path and pledged continued cooperation in safeguarding the common interests of both nations.

To further advance bilateral ties, Xi proposed strengthening high-level exchanges, enhancing cooperation across party, government, military, and diplomatic channels, and deepening exchanges on governance and development. He highlighted the significance of the 65th anniversary of the China-DPRK Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance, noting that both sides would organize commemorative activities.

Xi called for greater practical cooperation in areas such as trade, agriculture, construction, science and technology, healthcare, and infrastructure. He also encouraged increased people-to-people exchanges through the reopening of border crossings and the resumption of air and rail connections.

Emphasizing the importance of preserving the traditional friendship between the two countries, Xi proposed expanding cooperation in education, culture, tourism, sports, media, youth programs, and sister-city partnerships. He also stressed the need to preserve historical sites related to the Chinese People's Volunteers.

On international affairs, Xi urged closer strategic coordination to safeguard regional peace, security, and development. He reiterated China’s support for a fairer international order, opposition to hegemonism and power politics, and commitment to strengthening the United Nations-centered international system. Xi also promoted cooperation under China’s vision of building a community with a shared future for humanity and advancing inclusive global development.

Both leaders expressed their commitment to further strengthening China-DPRK relations and promoting stability and prosperity in the region.
