According to Qatar News Agency Amir of State of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani said he discussed ways to enhance relations between Qatar and Guyana during talks with President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali.

In a post on his official X account, the Amir said that both sides discussed expanding areas of economic, trade, and investment partnership between the two countries.

Amir of Qatar said greater cooperation would open up broader horizons for the growing bilateral relations, enhance joint work and help meet the aspirations of the two friendly countries.

President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali has described the growing relationship between Guyana and Qatar as a partnership of purpose, built on friendship, shared interests and expanding economic opportunities.

Addressing a reception in Doha marking Guyana’s 60th Independence Anniversary, President Ali expressed appreciation for Qatar’s warm hospitality and said the two countries, despite being separated by more than 11,000 kilometres, were increasingly connected by common aspirations and a shared determination to create a better future.

He recalled that Guyana gained independence on May 26, 1966, while Qatar became independent in 1971. The two countries established diplomatic relations on August 23, 1996, with their ties gaining significant momentum in recent years.

President Ali highlighted Guyana’s rapid economic transformation following the development of its offshore petroleum resources, stressing that oil was intended to finance the country’s transformation rather than define its identity. He said Guyana was investing in infrastructure, agriculture, tourism, industries and human capital to build a diversified and competitive economy.

He noted that Qatar had become an important partner in Guyana’s economic diplomacy, particularly following his May 2023 visit to Doha and the opening of Guyana’s embassy there. The September 2023 state visit by Qatar’s Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, further strengthened bilateral cooperation, while the first political consultations between the two countries in December 2024 established a structured mechanism for continued dialogue.

The Guyanese president pointed to growing Qatari investments in tourism, infrastructure and energy, including the Georgetown Seafront Resort and Convention Centre and QatarEnergy’s participation in offshore Block S4. He said cooperation also held considerable potential in agriculture, food security, renewable energy, tourism, technology and human-capital development.

President Ali said the expanding relationship demonstrated how friendship could be transformed into opportunity and shared prosperity, expressing confidence that Guyana-Qatar cooperation would continue to grow in the years ahead.
