Recent developments in Cyprus and the broader Eastern Mediterranean have once again highlighted ongoing political, diplomatic, and security concerns involving the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Türkiye, and the Greek Cypriot Administration.

Türkiye has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights and security of both the Turkish Cypriots and the TRNC. Speaking during a weekly briefing, officials from Türkiye’s National Defense Ministry emphasized that any military cooperation or alliance perceived as targeting the interests of Türkiye or the Turkish Cypriot people would not succeed. The statement came in response to growing concerns over a recent defense-related agreement between France and the Greek Cypriot Administration. Turkish authorities argued that such initiatives risk upsetting the delicate balance on the island and could contribute to regional instability. As a guarantor state under the Cyprus framework, Türkiye reiterated its determination to safeguard the security and sovereign rights of Turkish Cypriots.

Meanwhile, the Union of Turkish Cypriot Municipalities continued to strengthen its international engagement by participating in meetings of the Council of Europe’s Governance Committee in Paris. Representatives from local administrations joined counterparts from across Europe to discuss issues such as education, environmental sustainability, biodiversity protection, and local governance. The participation was viewed as an important opportunity for Turkish Cypriot municipalities to contribute to wider European discussions on shared challenges and policy solutions.

In the field of education, a delegation from the TRNC Ministry of National Education held a series of meetings in Kazakhstan during the 9th Meeting of the Ministers of Education of the Organization of Turkic States. Discussions with officials from Akhmet Yasawi International Kazakh-Turkish University focused on academic cooperation, higher education opportunities, and initiatives aimed at increasing student mobility among Turkic states. Both sides expressed interest in expanding educational partnerships and strengthening academic exchanges.

The TRNC Ministry of Foreign Affairs also addressed an incident that occurred on 11 June 2026 involving an individual from the Greek Cypriot side who entered the area of Çayhan Düzü, located within TRNC territory, while accompanied by members of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). According to the ministry, investigations revealed that the individual was employed by the Greek Cypriot Fire Service and had been participating in activities conducted within the Buffer Zone. TRNC authorities initiated legal procedures regarding the unauthorized entry and later released the individual after completing the necessary formalities. The ministry expressed concern that UNFICYP had facilitated activities without prior coordination or approval from TRNC authorities and formally lodged a protest. Officials stressed the importance of improved cooperation to prevent similar incidents and avoid unnecessary tensions in the future.

Additionally, the TRNC Ministry of Foreign Affairs commented on ongoing discussions concerning the implementation of a 2001 European Court of Human Rights judgment related to the fourth Greek Cypriot application. The ministry maintained that all obligations arising from the judgment had been fulfilled and argued that the matter should no longer require supervision by the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers. Officials further stated that political considerations had delayed closure of the process despite repeated assessments indicating compliance. The ministry also emphasized that the effectiveness of the Immovable Property Commission remains a matter for the European Court of Human Rights, which has consistently recognized the commission as an effective domestic remedy. The TRNC reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the commission and maintaining the property framework currently in place.
