The fifth GCC Fil-Golfers Tournament 2026 brought together Filipino golf enthusiasts from across the Gulf, promoting sportsmanship, friendship and community unity despite challenging regional circumstances.

Organised by the Philippine Golf Association Qatar (PGAQ), the two-day tournament attracted around 80 players representing Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the UAE and Oman. Competitions were held at Doha Golf Club and Education City Golf Club, followed by a prize-giving ceremony.

Speaking to ASIAN TELEGRAPH, Ambassador of the Philippines to Qatar HE Mardomel Celo D Melicor, attending the tournament for the first time, praised the organisers for bringing together golfers from across the GCC.

He described the event as a demonstration of camaraderie, goodwill and sporting passion, noting that such gatherings help communities remain connected even during difficult times. He also highlighted the tournament’s contribution to Qatar’s ambition of becoming a leading international sports destination, allowing participants to return home with fond memories of Doha and a positive impression of Qatar’s development and hospitality.

Charlotte Gapasin, president of PGAQ and chief organiser, told ASIAN TELEGRAPH that the annual tournament rotates among GCC countries, with last year’s edition held in Abu Dhabi. She welcomed the participating teams and praised their determination to attend despite travel challenges.

Founded in 2008, PGAQ now has around 70 members, comprising approximately 40 Filipinos and 30 members of other nationalities. The non-profit association welcomes golfers from different backgrounds and promotes inclusivity through sport.

Gapasin said encouraging greater female participation was among her priorities. The association has around 15 active female golfers, with the potential to reach 20 to 25, and hopes to create more opportunities for women to participate competitively.

Renier Westerzen, golf operations manager at Doha Golf Club, praised the strong relationship between the club and PGAQ. He described the tournament as a popular annual gathering, reaffirming the club’s commitment to supporting the association’s activities.

Benjamin Santuyo, captain of Team Saudi Arabia, said nine players attended, although 12 had initially planned to participate. He commended the Qatar organising committee for its excellent arrangements and expressed hope that the tournament would continue annually.

Victor Liwanag, captain of Team UAE, also thanked the organisers, sponsors and host golf clubs, saying the event exceeded expectations and provided an excellent opportunity for Filipino expatriates to maintain friendships across the region.

Representing Oman as its sole participant, Jindrex Rapacon praised the organisation and encouraged more Filipinos in Oman to take up golf and join future tournaments.

Non-Filipino participant Mark, originally from Glasgow, Scotland, praised the event’s organisation and the welcoming Filipino golfing community. He also recognised Filipinos’ valuable contributions to Qatar across hospitality, retail and healthcare.

Beyond competition, the tournament demonstrated how sport can bridge national boundaries, strengthen expatriate communities and foster lasting friendships across the Gulf. Organisers and participants expressed hope for another successful gathering next year.
