Shaeqeen-e-Fun Doha, a prominent literary forum of Pakistani expatriates in Qatar, recently organised an online Independence Day Mushaira, bringing together poets and poetry enthusiasts from Qatar, Pakistan and other parts of the world.

Established in 1992, the literary forum used the virtual gathering to celebrate Pakistan’s independence through Urdu poetry while highlighting the importance of language, literature and cultural heritage among overseas Pakistanis.

Representing Pakistan’s Ambassador to Qatar Muhammad Aamir as Chief Guest, Community Attaché Officer Usama Idrees conveyed the ambassador’s message to the organisers and participants. He said the Mushaira provided overseas Pakistanis with an opportunity to express their love for Pakistan, reaffirm their national identity and maintain their connection with Urdu and its rich literary traditions.

A large number of poets and literary enthusiasts participated through Zoom. The program opened with the recitation of the Holy Qur’an, followed by the national anthems of Pakistan and Qatar.

Chairman Shaeqeen-e-Fun Doha, Mohammad Atiq, a former senior qanker welcomed the participants, especially renowned educationist and poet Dr Pirzada Qasim (Karachi), Community Welfare Attache, Embassy of Pakistan Qatar, the participating poets and literary enthusiasts.

He congratulated the Pakistani community on Independence Day and praised writers and poets living abroad for preserving their linguistic and cultural ties with Pakistan.

In his opening address, Shaeqeen-e-Fun Doha President, Nawaz Mohammad Akram spoke about independence, national responsibilities and the role of literature in society.

He described freedom as both a privilege and a responsibility, stressing the importance of continuing literary activities that promote Urdu and help younger generations remain connected with their cultural and national heritage.

Osama Idrees also appreciated Sha-e-Qeene Fun Doha for organising the event, noting that literary and cultural programs help overseas Pakistani communities remain connected with their language, traditions and national identity.

He congratulated the organisers and participants for using poetry to promote patriotism and unity.

Dr Pirzada Qasim Siddiqui presided over the Mushaira, while Shakil Jazib engagingly conducted the proceedings. Poets Azher Abbas, Ambareen Haseeb Amber, Tariq Sabzwari, Farzana Safdar, Raza Hussain Run, Asif Shah and Sanwal Abbasi presented selected poetry reflecting love for Pakistan, the importance of independence, national unity, memories of the homeland and hopes for a better future.

Asif Shafi also presented a Naat in connection with the blessed month of Rabi-ul-Awwal, adding a spiritual touch to the literary evening.

The program concluded with a vote of thanks by General Secretary Qamar uz Zaman Bhatti, who expressed appreciation to the chief guest, poets, guests, participants and organisers.

The virtual Mushaira highlighted how literature and poetry can bridge geographical distances. For Pakistani expatriates, the gathering offered a meaningful way to celebrate independence while keeping alive their connection with Pakistan, Urdu and their cultural heritage.
