Article: What’s Behind China’s 4.7% Growth in H1

The latest economic data out from China has raised an old debate in global markets, as the world’s second-largest economy recorded a 4.7% expansion in the first half, which is quickly characterised by some Western analysts as a sign of slowing momentum. However, viewing China’s current growth only through the lens of raw GDP growth is a misreading of the country’s strategy. What the data actually reveals is a blueprint of an engine undergoing a structural pivot, from short-term velocity to long-term resilience.

For an economy that generated nearly 70 trillion yuan (1 USD = 6.7909 RMB) in just six months, 3.6 trillion yuan more to its economic output compared to the same period previous year, the sheer scale of expansion is unmatched around the world. Amid volatile global markets marked by soaring inflation, raised interest rates, and disrupted supply chains, achieving this level of stability is highly remarkable.

But there is more behind the numbers. Critics urged China to move away from its reliance on property development and low-end assembly for years. Now, that transition is happening. While the housing sector continues its correction, high-tech manufacturing has stepped into the breach, expanding by 13.3% in H1.

Driven by the explosion in artificial intelligence and advanced computing, China now manufactures more than 1.5 billion microchips on a daily basis. From 3D printing equipment to industrial robotics, the rapid deployment of automation across factory floors is cushioning the broader economic transition and fundamentally redefining global supply chain dependencies. These are all physical evidence of high-quality productive forces driving the growth.

Moreover, this transformation is intertwined with a green transition. Robust growth in the production of lithium-ion batteries and bio-based materials shows that "green tech" is a primary momentum of commercial growth. Even the closely-watched property sector is beginning to show some positive signs. Housing inventories are declining, and transaction volumes in mega cities are finding a healthier floor, thanks to policies working on both the supply and demand side.

For international observers, the takeaway is clear: the era of double-digit expansion has drawn to a close, which is replaced by a strategy of technological self-reliance and manufacturing complexity. The target is not just the growth rate anymore, but how sustainably and securely it can innovate. By anchoring its future in advanced engineering and green infrastructure, China is quietly protecting itself from external shocks—and charting a resilient course that will shape the global economic order for the future. The evidence is clear. The IMF reduced the global growth outlook, while raising China’s prospects.
